DIY Gold Dipped Bowl

As we were perusing the aisles of a local GoodWIll looking for materials for some upcoming projects we happened to fall across this adorable wonky edged bowl for a dollar. We loved the shape of the bowl, and although we weren't sold on the color the price was in out budget so we figured we would pick it up and deal with the color later. Fast forward a few days and the idea sprung on us that this bowl would be perfect for a gold dipped rim! This process can be used on almost any kind of home decor and we always wanted to give this project a try!

This DIY is a great idea for a quick gift or just repurposing something that has been sitting on a shelf for a while. All you'll need is:

  • A Bowl (or whatever you would like to dip)
  • Gold Acrylic Paint
  • Flat White Spray Paint
  • A Paint Brush
  • Painters Tape

Here is the bowl as we bought it, nothing wrong with it at all. We just thought it could use a little facelift.

First, start with a few coats of spray paint. This bowl was a little tricky and required four coats, but usually two or three will do. Make sure to wait at least 15 minutes in between coasts. Also, make sure to not spray to close to the object, otherwise you will create irremovable drip marks :/

Take a strip of painters tape and create the type of edge you desire. Don't worry about it being perfectly straight a little imperfection here or there will give it that handmade aesthetic that we love so much.

Next, take your gold paint and cover the edge and the inside of the bowl if you choose (we did). Don't be discouraged if it doesn't look like solid gold after a coat or two. Depending on what type of surface you are trying to cover (we were covering something with a slippery surface so it took a bit of patience to get a solid covering) it might take a while to get that perfect gold shimmer but it is well worth the wait!

Let dry, remove tape, and enjoy your brand new conversation piece :D
